Share

Lidl Polska has strengthened its position as Poland’s Fairtrade market leader, generating over EUR 773,000 in Fairtrade Premiums for certified farming cooperatives and accounting for 67% of the country’s Fairtrade-certified cocoa volume. As Main Partner of POLAGRA, Lidl Polska will be present at Poland’s leading food industry trade fair in September, where producers, buyers, distributors, and market leaders come together to shape the future of the sector.

Lidl Polska has officially confirmed its position as the Fairtrade market leader in Poland. The latest data shows that the retailer clearly dominates the market, both in terms of the volume of Fairtrade-certified cocoa used and the value of the Fairtrade Premium generated for producers in countries of the Global South.

By choosing products bearing the Fairtrade label, consumers have a real impact on improving the living and working conditions of farmers in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. For years, Lidl Polska has consistently focused on responsible trade that protects biodiversity and supports local communities. The scale of this long-term commitment is best illustrated by the latest market data.

A Scale of Commitment That Changes Lives

According to the Fairtrade 2025 summary, Lidl Polska holds the leading position in Poland both in terms of the value of the Fairtrade Premium generated and the volume of Fairtrade-certified cocoa used.

Leader in the cocoa segment: The volume of Fairtrade-certified cocoa used by Lidl Polska reached 3,331 tonnes. This means that the company accounts for 67% of the total volume of Fairtrade-certified cocoa used in Poland (the nationwide total amounts to 4,978 tonnes).

Millions in financial support: Purchasing decisions made by Lidl customers generated a Fairtrade Premium of EUR 773,077 for certified farmer cooperatives, equivalent to PLN 3,169,616. This represents 38% of the total Fairtrade Premium generated across Poland.

What Is the Fairtrade Premium?

The Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money paid on top of the regular market price directly to certified farmer cooperatives. These funds are invested in projects that are essential for the development of local communities. Through the Premium, farmers can modernize their farms and implement environmentally friendly practices, while entire regions benefit from improved infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, access to clean water, and education.

Conscious Choices Build a Better World

Today’s consumers are increasingly paying attention not only to price and product composition but also to the origin of products and the conditions under which they are made. Already 56% of Polish consumers recognize the FAIRTRADE label on products, almost double the figure recorded a decade ago, when recognition stood at less than 30% in 2015. Furthermore, 80% of consumers who recognize the label declare that they trust it (according to GlobeScan consumer research 2025).

"Fairtrade is a shared commitment by farmers, companies, and consumers to create a more equitable future, free from exploitation and child labor, while respecting local environments. We congratulate Lidl Polska on being the leader in both Fairtrade Premium generation and the volume of cocoa used in private-label products. We would also like to thank Lidl customers for choosing Fairtrade-certified products in their everyday shopping. Every chocolate bar carrying the FAIRTRADE label gives cocoa farmers an opportunity for a better life and the development of their farms," explains Zbigniew Szalbot from the Fairtrade Polska Foundation.

Transparent supply chains and the elimination of exploitation and child labor are the foundations of Fair Trade. By purchasing products bearing the blue-and-green Fairtrade label in Lidl Polska stores, every consumer becomes part of a broader positive change in the world.

The choice is extensive. Last year alone, nearly 270 Fairtrade-certified products were available in Lidl Polska stores under brands such as J.D. Gross, Fin Carré, Favorina, and Deluxe.

"Our goal is for Lidl Polska to be a place where customers can make good decisions every day. That is why we are expanding the availability of products certified for ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility. We encourage our customers to choose products carrying the Fairtrade label and thereby contribute to building a fairer world," emphasizes Aleksandra Robaszkiewicz, Director of Corporate Affairs at Lidl Polska.

Lidl Polska is part of the international Lidl Group, which consists of independent companies operating throughout Europe and the United States. Lidl’s history dates back to the 1930s, while the first stores under the Lidl brand were established in Germany in the 1970s. Today, the company operates approximately 12,600 stores in 31 countries, including more than 950 stores in Poland.
